Biography

Dr. Emma Howes specializes in the teaching of writing and studying the systems of learning where we encounter literacy. While most of these explorations focus on historical settings in the southern Appalachian region, she also works on the integration of contemplative practices in the first-year writing classroom as an anti-oppressive pedagogy with her Coastal colleague, Christian Smith. Her most recent wanderings have taken her with another colleague, Anna Oldfield, to the mountains and cities of Kazakhstan, where she is spending the 2019-2020 academic year teaching.
