Spring Break in London

This program will be based in London for one week, taking full advantage of the cultural, historical, and political highlights of the city.  In conjunction with Spring 2013 courses in Politics and Literature, students will visit such sites as the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Shakepeare's Globe Theatre, St. Paul's Cathedral, the British Museum, and the Tower of London.  Other activities include walking tours through historically and culturally signficant neighborhoods, theatre performances, and a day trip to Oxford.

Cynthia Port, Assistant Professor of English, taught courses on the Coastal@Oxford trips in July 2009 and July 2010.  She lived in London from 1999 to 2001 while serving as a graduate fellow for the University of Pennsylvania's year-long study abroad program at King's College in London.  Her area of academic specialization is Modern and Contemporary British and Anglophone literature.

Holley Tankersley, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Politics & Geography, traveled with Coastal@Oxford in 2010 and studied abroad as an undergraduate in Zimbabwe.  Her field of specialization is Public Policy and political institutions, with a focus on the executive and judicial institutions of government.  Her research examines the roles that institutional structures play in shaping and altering domestic public policy outcomes.

Tripthi Pillai is Assistant Professor of British Renaissance literature in the department of English. Her areas of expertise include Renaissance drama, critical theory, and cultural studies. Originally from India, Tripthi has spent several years living and studying abroad, specifically in the UK and other Commonwealth nations, France, and Italy. She networks and collaborates actively with the faculty and staff at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and at King’s College in London, both valuable educational and cultural sources that would enrich students’ experiences of short-term study in England.

When is the deadline for application?

The priority deadline for this program is Friday, Nov. 2, 2012.  The general application deadline is Nov. 30, 2012, but some programs may be full be this deadline and so applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

How do I apply for the program?

Applications for all short-term study abroad programs must be submitted via the online link at: https://www.coastal.edu/academics/international/studyabroad/application/.  Each complete application will include personal contact information, health form and participation fitness certification, acceptance of the terms of the study abroad agreement, statement of purpose, academic reference, personal reference and copy of your transcript, along with a deposit of $500 toward the cost of the respective program paid to Student Accounts.  Should you not be accepted for the program, your deposit will be returned to you; otherwise your deposit will be applied to program costs.  The priority deadline for submitting a complete application is Friday, Nov. 2, 2012.

This Spring Break program takes place March 9-17, 2013.

What is the cost of this study abroad program?

The cost of this program is $2,495 and includes:

  • Lodging and meals (breakfast only)
  • International air and local transportation
  • Field trips
  • Trip insurance

 When are payments due for the program?


$500 due with application

Second Payment

Dec. 14, 2012 - 1/3 of remaining balance

Third Payment

Jan. 18, 2013 - 1/3 of remaining balance

Fourth Payment

Feb. 15, 2013 - pay remaining balance

Tuition is included as part of the Spring 2013 semester


All payments are to be made to the Office of Student Accounts for credit to the respective study abroad program.  The payment due dates are fixed.  If payments are not received on or before the due dates, students will be dropped from the program.

What is the refund policy?

If after submitting your application and paying the $500 deposit, you are not accepted into the program, your deposit will be refunded within two weeks.  If Coastal Carolina University finds it necessary to cancel the program, all payments made will be refunded.  In the event the participant finds it necessary to cancel, we will make every effort to refund monies paid, less the $500 deposit and any funds already committed to vendors for the program.

How many credit hours can I complete during this program?

Students enrolled in this travel study program MUST be enrolled in at least one of the following courses for Spring 2013.  Students enrolled in more than one of the courses below should consult the faculty leaders to identify how the experience might be used in more than one course.

ENGL 205: Literature and Culture: Literary London (3 credits)

ENGL 304: British Literature II (3 credits)

ENGL 424: Studies in British Literature (3 credits)

POLI: 491M: Comparative Chief Executives (3 credits)

Does this course/program satisfy core curriculum requirements?

ENGL 205 has been approved to satisfy Core Goal 5b.

Are there any prerequisites for this study?

ENGL 205 requires ENGL 101 and 102 with a grade of C or above.
ENGL 304 requires ENGL 101 and 102 or 211 with a C or above and one other 200-level ENGL course.
ENGL 424 requires ENGL 101 and 102 or 211 with a C or above, one other ENGL course with a C or above, and Junior standing.
POLI 491M: requires permission of the instructor.


Are scholarships or financial aid available for this program?

The Horry County Higher Education Commission International Awareness Award is available to assist graduates of accredited high schools in Horry County to participate in these programs.  YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE ACCEPTED INTO A SHORT-TERM STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM TO APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP. To determine whether you have additional eligibility for financial aid during the summer short term study abroad programs, please see your financial aid counselor in Kingston Hall.  Scholarship applications are due in the Office of International Programs by Nov. 2, 2012.  The applications for the scholarships can be accessed here: Horry County Higher Education Commission International Awareness Award, 2012-13.

What are the physical demands for this program?

This program will entail a significant about of city walking; participants will be expected to be able to walk for up to 45 minutes and to climb stairs.
