Maymester in Thailand

Explore the rich legacy of the Thai people through their art and design. Students will be exposed to both the traditional and the modern culture of Southeast Asia by visiting significant and iconic locations. Through these visits students will develop a better understanding of art and design through the study of religion, materials, and the culture of Thailand.

Departure from Myrtle Beach to Bangkok.


May 13

Arrival Bangkok

Arrive in Bangkok, meet the guide at airport and transfer to 4*Hotel.


May 14


Visit "Wat Trimitre", the temple with the Golden Buddha, "Wat Po", the temple with the reclining Buddha, "Wat Prakheo", and Grand Palace.


May 15

Bangkok - Damnoen Saduak - Kanchanaburi

Visit the colorful floating market of Damnoen Saduak. Transfer to Kanchanaburi. Visit the famous Bridge over River Kwai and the War Museum. Overnight in Kanchanaburi.


May 16

Kanchanaburi - Phitsanulok

Drive to Phitsanulok. Enjoy this relaxing, scenic trip to the Central part of Thailand. Overnight in Phitsanulok.


May 17

Phitsanulok - Sukhothai - Phitsanulok

Visit the Historical Park of former Capital Sukhothai. Overnight in Phitsanulok.


May 18

Phitsanulok - Chiang Mai

Drive to Chiang Mai. In the evening we suggest to visit the buzzing Night Bazaar of Chiang Mai. Overnight in Chiang Mai.


May 19

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai City Tour. Visit Elephant School (Pang Chang Mae Sa). Visit the hill temple of Doi Suthep and enjoy the spectacular view from the hilltop.


May 20

ChiangMai - Chiang Rai

Drive to Chiang Rai. Visit Wat Rong Khun, en route stops at the hot springs and hill tribe villages. Overnight in Chiang Rai.


May 21

Chiang Rai - Golden Triangle - Chiang Rai

Visit the Golden Triangle where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Burma meet. Optional: speed boat ride on the Mekong River. Overnight in Chiang Rai.


May 22

Chiang Rai - Bangkok

Transfer to Chiang Rai Airport for a domestic flight to Bangkok. After arrival in Bangkok, transfer to hotel. Free time in Bangkok.


May 23

Bangkok- Ayutthaya-Bangkok

Visit Bang Pa-In Summer Palace, Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, Wat Pha Mahathat. Overnight in Bangkok.


May 24


After breakfast, transfer to airport for flight back to USA.

Jeff Case has lived in Thailand and is familiar with local travel, religious influences, cultural practices, and the architecture and art in the region.  He maintains strong connections with Thailand and both speaks and writes the language fluently; he has a working knowledge of the Laotian language as well.  As a graduate student, he spent time in Puerto Penasco, Mexico in conjunction with his visual communications coursework at the University of Arizona.  In Maymester 2012, he participated in CCU's program to China.

Dr. Arne Flaten has lived in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.  Over the years he led six study abroad programs for Coastal Carolina University to Europe that included travel to England, France, Germany, Greece and Italy, and has recently completed visits to Egypt and China on behalf of Coastal.

When is the deadline for application?

The priority deadline for this program is Friday, Nov. 2, 2012.  The general application deadline is Nov. 30, 2012, but some programs may be full by this deadline and so applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

How do I apply for the program?

Applications for all short-term study abroad programs must be submitted via the online link at: https://www.coastal.edu/academics/international/studyabroad/application/.    Each complete application will include personal contact information, health form and participation fitness certification, acceptance to the terms of the study abroad agreement, statement of purpose, academic reference, and copy of your transcript, along with a deposit of $500 toward the cost of the respective program paid to Student Accounts. Should you not be accepted for the program, your deposit will be returned to you; otherwise your deposit will be applied to program costs. The priority deadline for submitting a complete application is Friday, Nov. 2, 2012.

What is the cost of this study abroad program?

The program costs of $4,085 include:

    • Lodging and some meals abroad
    • Air and local transportation
    • Field trips and excursions
    • Trip insurance


When are payments due for the program?


$500 due with application

Second Payment

Dec. 14, 2012 - 1/3 of remaining balance

Third Payment

Jan. 18, 2013- 1/3 of remaining balance

Fourth Payment

Feb. 15, 2013- pay remaining balance

Final Payment – tuition only

May 9, 2013

All payments are to be made to the Office of Student Accounts for credit to the respective study abroad program.
The payment due dates are fixed.  If payments are not received on or before the due dates, students will be dropped from the program.

What is the refund policy?

If after submitting your application and paying the $500 deposit, you are not accepted into the program, your deposit will be refunded within two weeks.  If Coastal Carolina University finds it necessary to cancel the program, all payments made will be refunded.  In the event the participant finds it necessary to cancel, we will make every effort to refund monies paid, less the $500 deposit and any funds already committed to vendors for the program.

How many credit hours can I complete during this program?

ARTD 499 Art & Design of Thailand (3 credits)

ARTH 392 Critiquing the Museum (3 credits)

Does this course/program satisfy core curriculum requirements?

Neither of the courses in this program satisfy core curriculum requirements.

Are there any prerequisites for this study?

Permission of the instructor required.

Are scholarships or financial aid available for this program?

The Horry County Higher Education Commission International Awareness Award is available to assist graduates of accredited high schools in Horry County to participate in these programs.  YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE ACCEPTED INTO A SHORT-TERM STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM TO APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP. To determine whether you have additional eligibility for financial aid during the summer short-term study abroad programs, please see your financial aid counselor in Kingston Hall. Scholarship applications are due in the Office of International Programs by Nov. 2, 2012. Do I need vaccinations to participate?

What are the physical demands of this program?

Physical demands are moderate. Participants should be in good physical condition.
