 Coastal
Carolina’s athletic programs are critical components of institutional
engagement with every constituency of the University. The academic
achievement of the student-athletes combined with their extraordinary
vitality and loyalty to Coastal Carolina make them role models for
current and future students.
On the playing field, Coastal Carolina student-athletes
have made exceptional strides, earning 35 NCAA Championship appearances
since 1989. In the last academic year, the men’s soccer team
tied for first place in the NCAA Division I with an overall GPA
of 3.31, and seven students earned national academic honors.
Coastal Carolina football has initiated a remarkable
tradition of developing and invigorating a social culture joining
the campus and the community. As Coastal Carolina intercollegiate
football becomes a tradition, there will be an exponential increase
in producing long-lived and spirited attachments to the University
involving enrolled students, alumni and our community.
Coastal Carolina’s impressive new Brooks
Stadium is named for local businessman Bob Brooks, whose $2 million
contribution represents the largest single gift in the history of
the institution. Named in honor of Brooks’ family, the stadium
was dedicated Sept. 6 during Coastal’s first football game.
Brooks’ contribution represents the largest single gift the
university has received to date. Phase I of the stadium construction
has 6,408 seats.
The stadium will be a work in progress, designed
to grow with the program, with a possible future seating capacity
of up to 20,000 seats. The Athletics Initiative includes completion
of the Brooks Stadium, construction of the Buddy Sasser Hall of
Fame, and extensive improvements to Charles L. Watson Baseball Stadium
and Vrooman Field.
