Professor James L. (Jim) Michie, a prominent Southeastern archaeologist, laid the foundation for the new Center for Archaeology and Anthropology at Coastal Carolina University. A native South Carolinian, Jim Michie's passion for archaeology began with investigations of Paleoindian prehistoric sites that he published beginning in the 1960s. He co-founded, with Dr. Robert L. Stephenson, the Archaeological Society of South Carolina, and in 1998 received the society's lifetime achievement award. This honor specifically recognized Jim Michie's work at Wachesaw plantation, his discovery and excavation of Richmond Hill plantation, and his investigations at The Oaks overlooking the Waccamaw River in what is now Brookgreen Gardens. Jim Michie became a history professor at Coastal Carolina University and also served as associate director of the Waccamaw Center for Historical and Cultural Studies from 1990 until his retirement in 1998.
