ABOUT DR. FLATEN
Professor Flaten has lived in various parts of the world, including the Middle East, Central Africa, and Europe. His research focuses on the Italian Renaissance, in particular the relationship between portraiture, medals, humanism, and the art market of the 15th century. More recently his area of interest has expanded to include virtual environments and digital reconstructions of lost architectural monuments. He is co-founder and co-director (with Paul Olsen) of Ashes2Art: Digital Reconstructions of Ancient Monuments, and is co-founder and co-director (with Steve Bailey) of the Digital Jazz Manuscript Archive.

Flaten's research has been supported by the Fulbright Commission; the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) at the National Gallery of Art, Washington; the Renaissance Society of America; the J. Paul Getty Research Institute; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Samuel H. Kress Foundation; the National Endowment for the Humanities; and the National Endowment for the Arts.

His publications include articles, essays, book reviews, and catalogue and encyclopedia entries in Word & Image, Oculus, Visual Resources, PostMedieval, The Art Market in Italy, The Encyclopedia of the Renaissance, The Encyclopedia of Sculpture, Renaissance Quarterly, The American Numismatic Society Magazine, and various exhibition catalogues and conference proceedings. His book, The Middledorf Collection: Medals and Plaquettes 15th to 20th Centuries (Indiana University Press), was published in 2011. He also is editor (with Alyson Gill, ASU) of a special issue of the journal Visual Resources (Taylor & Francis, 2009) on Computers and Archaeology; editor (with Charles Rosenberg, Notre Dame) of a special issue of The Medal (British Museum, Spring 2010); and editor (with Stephanie Miller, CCU) of Visual Resources (Spring 2012) on Renaissance Portraits in Italy.
