Professor Flaten has lived in various parts of the world, including the Middle East, Central Africa, and Europe. His research focuses on the Italian Renaissance, in particular the relationship between portraiture, medals, humanism, and the art market of the 15th century.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Flaten has received grants and fellowships, including a Fulbright Grant to Italy, a fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, Research Grants from the Renaissance Society of America and the J. Paul Getty Research Institute, a fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (which he declined), two Curatorial Fellowships from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, and an NEH Summer Institute fellowship at UCLA.

His publications include articles, essays, book reviews, catalogue and encyclopedia entries in Word & Image, Oculus, The Art Market in Italy, The Encyclopedia of the Renaissance, The Encyclopedia of Sculpture, Renaissance Quarterly, and various exhibition catalogues. His book, The Middledorf Collection: Medals and Plaquettes 15th to 20th Centuries (Indiana University Press), is expected in 2007; he is also co-editor of a collection of essays on Renaissance Art and Culture, expected in 2007.
