Art Foundation Courses and Sophomore Review Requirements
Timely progress through the Art program depends on early enrollment in, and successful completion of Art Foundation courses. Foundation courses are designed to build art skills, and must be taken before enrolling in Intermediate and Advanced courses. During the first semester, students are encouraged to enroll concurrently in ARTS 103 Fundamentals of Art I, and ARTS 111 Drawing I. During the second semester, students are encouraged to enroll concurrently in ARTS 104 Fundamentals of Art II, and ARTS 112 Drawing II. See the Typical Plan of Study outline.

Typically, at the end of the sophomore year students enroll in ARTS 297, Sophomore Review, and submit portfolios for faculty review. Transfer students beyond the sophomore year must enroll in ARTS 297, Sophomore Review, and submit portfolios for faculty review during their first semester at Coastal.

Art Emphasis Courses
After completing courses at the Foundation level, and after consulting with an Art Faculty advisor, students typically select an area of Art Emphasis. Art Emphasis courses are designed to aid development of specific art proficiencies. Areas of Art Concentration are Art Studio and Graphic Design. Within Art Studio, students must choose an emphasis from Art History, Art Education, Ceramics, Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture.

Graduating Senior Requirements
During the last semester of the senior year, graduating seniors must enroll in ARTS 497, Artist As A Professional. All Art majors must exhibit their Art professionally prior to graduation. All Art Studio majors must present professionally-prepared Portfolios for review by a committee of Art Faculty. Portfolios must include photo documentation of student work (slides or photographs), written artist's statements and resumes. Photographic samples of outstanding student work are occasionally selected for the Department’s teaching collection.
