Susan Slavik uses 28 years of Kindergarten through 12th grade art classroom teaching experience to inform her courses at Coastal Carolina University. She taught art to children in the Livonia, Michigan public schools and served as an adjunct professor at Eastern Michigan University and Henry Ford Community College before moving to South Carolina in 1998.
While completing her Ph.D. at Florida State University, Susan was awarded a Getty Center for Education in the Arts Doctoral Fellowship in 1992. She also received Florida Institute for Art Education fellowships in 1989, 1990, and 1991.
Dr. Slavik served as the Director of the Curriculum Leadership in the Arts Summer Institute at Coastal Carolina University from 2000—2003, Visual Arts Coordinator of the Summer Arts Academy in 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2007, and University Supervisor for graduate and undergraduate Art Education students since 1998.
Dr. Slavik teaches ARTE 327, ARTE 349, ARTE 340, ARTE 540, ARTE 541, EDSC 550, EDSC 580, and EDSC 590. Dr. Slavik has also led travel/study programs to Italy, Barcelona & Northern Spain, and Athens and the Greek Islands.
Susan Slavik has been honored by the South Carolina Art Education Association when she received the Outstanding Performance in Higher Education Award in 2001 and when she was selected as the Higher Education Division Teacher of the Year in 2005. The SCAEA has recently nominated Dr. Slavik for the 2007 NAEA Higher Education Art Educator of the Year |
