The Department of Art encourages all applicants to come for a tour of the campus. You are encouraged to complete your application well in advance of the date in which you want to learn of the admissions decision. To apply as a first-time freshman or transfer student for the Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship, please submit the following information (Applicants are encouraged to submit the application for admission and the scholarship application materials at the same time as a single package, since this greatly speeds processing time):

  • Application for Admission
  • Application Fees
  • Submit the application and application fees to:
    The Office of Admissions
    Coastal Carolina University
    PO Box 261954
    Conway, South Carolina 29528-6054

YOUR ART PORTFOLIO
The portfolio is an essential component of the application. It reflects the applicant's interests, ideas, creativity, energy, motivation, and previous experience in the visual arts. The work should represent the applicant's best and most recent creative efforts and should demonstrate knowledge, skills, and visual sensitivity to such basic elements as line, form, color, composition, and space. The work included should also demonstrate conceptual development - what you say through your artwork. When putting together the portfolio, choose pieces you feel most strongly about and pieces that express your particular strengths and interests. This work may reflect a variety of media and techniques or a concentration in just a few.

Your portfolio must contain at least 10 examples of your work. Portfolios with fewer than 10 pieces are considered incomplete and are not reviewed for a Scholarship. The portfolio format should be as follows:

  • Portfolios can be presented in slide format (35mm, 2 x 2) or as digital files on CDs or zip disks.
  • Include a Portfolio Image List that numbers and identifies each slide or digital image.
  • Number your images to correspond with your Portfolio Image List.
  • Slides must be in full 8 1/2"x11" plastic slide sheets (do not cut the plastic sheets). Label each with your name; indicate the top of the piece, the medium, dimensions, and the date it was completed.
  • For each image, include the following information:
    Your Name
    Medium
    Dimension
    Date Completed
Mail (no emails please) your portfolios to the admissions office.
Do not send original work, or your only copy of reproduced material, as the Department cannot be responsible for its safety.

LETTERS OF REFERENCE
Submit two letters of reference from teachers, employers, mentors, or others who can comment on your skills, motivation, character, and background.

If you want your material returned to you - enclose with the portfolio a self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient postage. You may also get your portfolio from the Department of Art during orientation or, after classes start during your first semester. Slides or disc that have not been picked up by the end of the first semester of school will become the property of the Department of Art.
