Fitting into the Pediment

Grades:5-8
Task Description:Students will be introduced to Greek architectural terms through the use of the website http://www.coastal.edu/ashes2art/. Specific attention is to be given to the Siphnian Treasury, Temple of Apollo, and the Athenian Treasury. Students will work together to create a class pediment incorporating a depiction of each student and utilizing various poses and techniques to fit into the confines of the pediment and evoke the personality of the class. As a figure study, the work will be drawn.
Greek Theatre Masks

Grades:5-8
Task Description:Students will learn about ancient Greek theatre masks in terms of their use, importance, design, materials, and aesthetic, using the Ashes2Art website in conjunction with other materials. The students will split into groups of 4-5 and will select an ancient Greek play. Each student will select a character from the play and will create his or her own theatre mask to represent the character chosen. After creating their masks, the students will put on the play (or selected scenes).
Shields and Helmets
Content Area:Visual Arts
Grades:5-8
Task Description:Students will learn about aesthetics and use of Greek armor through research on the Ashes2Art website (focusing on the Gymnasium Complex and friezes on the Siphnian Treasury) in conjunction with other resources. Utilizing copper tooling, students will create shields and/or helmets using Greek symbols and design to depict a current image of the students’ choosing.
