Kirby Hood
Class of 2009

Kirby HoodI started at Coastal as a music major. After switching majors a few times, I applied to the interdisciplinary studies program. My concentration areas were business, history, and education, which I will use to create educational video games.

I started at MagiQuest three years ago for a summer job, and it turned into so much more. I was given the opportunity to turn fantasy into reality. I was asked to work as a member of the creative team and develop the product for a wider variety of investors.

I helped to improve the Educational Interactive Video Games for MagiQuest based on Jean Piaget's theory of Cognitive Development. I also improved the grade level games, as well as the corporate team building adventures.  I worked with major investors on the concept ideas and product development, and MagiQuest now has two locations in Japan as well as 12 locations in the United States.  I also helped to create the concept ideas for the Great Wolf Lodge locations.

I plan to eventually find a position doing research and product development, as well as using my creativity and eventually owning an interactive gaming venue dealing with world history. My plans are to work with various companies on their marketing and advertising ideas as well as opening a performance venue with my business partner in Washington, D.C.

Bob Derr
Class of 2001

Bob DerrI graduated from Coastal in 2001 from the Interdisciplinary Studies program.  I was also selected student of the year for the interdisciplinary studies program.  Before attending Coastal, I was taking online classes from Memphis University.  I felt there was something lacking by taking all my classes on line.  I learned about the Interdisciplinary Studies program from a friend, Tim McCormick, who works at Coastal.  After looking into the program, I knew it was what I was looking for to complete my degree.  Coastal was great in helping me choose the right classes, and the schedules fit right into mine with working full-time and having a family. The toughest thing about attending classes was getting computer time with my daughters who were in high school at the time.

I am employed full time as a battalion chief with the Myrtle Beach Fire Department and part time as a flight medic with Carolina Life Care, a division of Omniflight.  I am married with four children ages 24 to 19 and have a 4 year old grandson.

Larry R. Muncey
Class of 2005

Larry MunceySince my graduation from Coastal Carolina University in 2005 with an interdisciplinary studies degree, I have obtained a double master’s degree from Webster University (human resource development & management and leadership). I am the administrative watch commander (Lieutenant) for the Horry County Police Department, where I have been employed since 1995. In addition to my career with the county police department, my wife and I also own an employment agency in Conway. I am a member of the Myrtle Beach Rotary Club, Loris Masonic Lodge and the Horry County Republican Party.

Future goals: I would like to teach at the college level.
