Horry County Schools

The Horry County Schools and Coastal Carolina University's mentoring program is school-based to improve students' school performance and eventual high school graduation rates. This program is made possible through the support of the Dalton and Linda Floyd Family.

School-based mentoring is an effective youth development strategy, leading to better attitudes, attendance and performance in school and improved peer relationships (Herrera et al., 2007). Horry County grades K-8 mentors are trusted friends who are committed to seeing a child grow and develop. They may start out as lunch buddies, tutors or reading buddies, but they work to create a caring relationship that will encourage children to do their personal best and stay in school.
