The Art of DrawingSeptember 10 - October 16, 2009
Bernard Chaet taught painting and drawing at Yale University from 1951 through 1990. The student drawings in this exhibition were personally selected by Professor Chaet and represent 39 years of teaching. Over the years, Chaet has taught hundreds of students.
He reached even more of us through his book, "The Art of Drawing". The book was one of my first drawing texts and I now use it as a resource in my courses. What I like about Chaet's method is his emphasis on the process of drawing and the development of the artist's individual "handwriting". Chaet's focus is the unique response of the artist to the world through direct observation.
The student drawings in this exhibition are marvelous for their variety. They are not perfect. We see signs of struggle as well as moments of success. That is what gives them the human touch. In all, we sense the immediacy of the drawing process so valuable to Chaet.
In this exhibit you will also see the mature work of two former Chaet students, the artists John Hull and Michael Mazur. It is interesting to compare their student drawings with their later work. Although Hull's and Mazur's work is very different, you can see that they share a common foundation in drawing.
One of the lessons of this exhibition is the sense of Chaet's deep generosity as a teacher. It resonates in the words of Hull and Mazur and in the pageant of personalities evident in the student drawings. |
