Gary M. Loftus Director	Donald Schunk Research Economist

The BB&T Center for Economic and Community Development was created by the Horry County Higher Education Commission in 1988 to conduct applied research and offer special services that are relevant to the need of the region. The Center acts as an information center for economic data for the region and serves as a bridge between the university and the community. The Center also works to place the university in a position to provide the expertise necessary for community leaders to achieve their goals of regional economic success and diversity, and enhance the quality of life for the region.

Under the guidance of an advisory board of local business leaders, the BB&T Center for Economic and Community Development has conducted many research projects through the years including numerous surveys, assessments, feasibility studies, and impact studies. The Center also provides both faculty and students with opportunities to conduct applied research projects for local businesses, organizations, and government agencies. The Center utilizes the faculty and resources of the university to enhance the community’s economic development and planning.
