What is Resort Tourism Management?

Resort Tourism Management is a major within the Wall College of Business where students focus on developing the skills necessary for managing hospitality or tourism service organizations in the context of a resort destination area. Students who successfully complete the requirements for the RTMA major earn a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration.

In addition to the standard business curriculum, the Resort Tourism Management curriculum includes internships and specialized coursework in the areas of quality process management, real estate finance investment, and resort planning. The curriculum is designed to focus on the unique characteristics of the business environment in a resort destination (such as the Grand Strand). Resort destination areas are usually in relatively remote locations and have relatively seasonal demand. Because of these characteristics, hospitality and tourism business are faced with difficult human resource, quality control, marketing, and financial challenges. Also, tourism growth inevitably leads to competition between tourists, the tourism industry, and host communities for scarce resources. This necessitates a more holistic approach to planning resort developments.
