Organizational mission or general goals: Coastal Carolina University is one of the fastest growing mid-sized regional teaching institutions in the country, made up of a community of students and teacher/scholars dedicated to the pursuit of wisdom and goodness in an environment where intellectual understanding is encouraged, individual dignity respected, and creativity stimulated.
Primary services provided: CCU offers a premier education, including undergraduate (bachelors level) and graduate (masters level) courses in 38 majors and 36 minors which can be taken for credit or audited; "short courses" offered through the Division of Education and Community and the Lifelong Learning Academies; lectures/seminars and other informational offerings; cultural exhibits and performance arts concerts; and a wide range of recreational, entertainment and sports activities. In addition, the university sponsors the ABLE aquatic fitness and exercise program with many senior participants. [See ABLE in this directory for more details.]
Primary clientele served: Students of traditional and non-traditional ages; citizens in the communities representing CCU's primary service area of Horry and Georgetown Counties.
Employees and/or volunteers: Over 220 faculty members and administrators; a faculty:student ratio of approximately 1:19.
Staff members eligible for professional credentialing and credentialed staff members employed: Over 78% of the faculty have earned the doctorate or terminal degrees in their fields of expertise.
Clients/patients/participants served each year: Approximately 7,000 students attend Coastal, including some 70 older adult students, plus an additional 600+ older adults and retirees who participate in the Lifelong Learning Academies. Hundreds of seniors also attend cultural, informational, recreational, entertainment, and sports events at CCU or one of its satellite facilities every year.
Organization accredited or certified by an outside agency or association: Coastal is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
Special services or pricing for senior citizens: Both the Division of Academic Outreach and the Center for the Study of Aging and Active Retirement (CSAAR) are specifically targeted at seniors [See listings in this Directory]. In addition to noncredit short courses, seminars, and workshops, credit courses like PSYCH 423: Psychology of Aging; PSYCH 425: Gerontology; and SOC 455: Sociology of Aging would be of particular benefit for older adults and retirees to take for credit or audit.
