Kasie's Video

“Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.”

The above is not just Kasandra Young’s favorite quote, it is what she lives by. A senior from Summerville, S.C., “Kasie” chose Coastal when her grandparents moved to the Grand Strand area. Since officially becoming a Chanticleer, she has pursued her own unique course of study as she chose to earn her communication degree while minoring in theatre.

Her academic load has treated her well in large part because no matter if she is in a comm class or having a blast in her costume construction theatre class, there is one constant.

“I have never been in a class where the professor didn’t know my name,” Kasie states. “The people at Coastal are there for you and truly want you to succeed.”

Thriving in an atmosphere that allows her to be creative, Kasie is thankful to Coastal for preparing her for the real world. Speaking of the real world, she has just a semester left on campus. Kasie plans to move to Charlotte after graduation to find a good job. Until then, she plans to enjoy her final 15 weeks at CCU.

Kasandra is from Summerville, S.C.
Kasandra is studying communication and theatre.

Q&A with Kasie

How did you hear about Coastal?:  My grandparents moved to the area and they told me that Coastal would be great for me to go to and stay close to home.

Why did you come to Coastal?:  I eventually did move in with my grandparents and went to HGTC initially. I then figured Coastal was right next door and was a great school so I came right over.

Favorite professor: That is a tough question because I have enjoyed all of them, but I would have to say Dr. Bergstrom. She is almost like a mentor to me because she really understands me and helps me through more than just her classes.

Favorite class: My favorite class actually goes along with my minor, Costume Construction. It is a break from all of the intense work you have to do in class and it just lets your mind flow and be creative.

Favorite aspect of Coastal?: I think my favorite aspect of Coastal would be how small the classes are. I have never been in a class where the professor didn’t know my name. The people at Coastal are there for you and truly want you to succeed.

Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?: My favorite part about living in this area is that it is a tourist spot so there is always something to do.

Clubs/Intramurals/other extracurricular activities involved in?: I am not really involved in a lot of activities, because I am constantly juggling my work, school, and social life; the usual struggle with college students.

Do you work anywhere currently (either on or off campus)?: I work at Food Lion in Murrells Inlet.

Plans after graduation?:  After graduation I am going to move to Charlotte with my aunt who actually has the same degree as me. She is going to help me get my resume out and help me look for jobs in a bigger city.

What are your hobbies?: I like to paint, perform lip sync battles with my family and binge watch Netflix/Hulu.

Do you have any hidden talents?: I don’t think I really have any hidden talents, except for being able to rap all of Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back.”

Bonus Info: I am just really excited to be graduating this semester and I am so thankful for my time at Coastal, because I feel like I have learned so much in order to help me in the real world.
