Megan's Video

On any college campus, you have those students who seem to pop up everywhere. Coastal is no exception. You see these involved students at Chanticleer athletic contests, on Prince Lawn for events and inside the Lib Jackson Student Union attending meetings or just hanging out. Megan Garrell, a senior from Myrtle Beach, is one of these students.

Megan finds herself deeply involved at Coastal Carolina for two reasons: she serves as the SGA vice president of public relations and as the student coordinator in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. While just one of these positions would make any student a very recognizable face on campus, Megan has embraced both roles. Needless to say, the student body knows who she is.

Describing herself as “resilient,” Megan says it brings her no greater pleasure than to overcome an obstacle and come out stronger than before. As someone who is very much in the public eye doing work that concerns a large portion of the campus community, she knows a thing or two about facing adversity. But, as you can tell from her glowing smile and from how she describes herself, Megan doesn’t let pressure get to her.

Her positive attitude and ability to thrive under stressful conditions are good indicators that she is heading down the right career path. Megan wants to pursue a career in public relations. Because of her skills identified above and because she holds a student government position that deals specifically with her desired industry, one can only assume that her background will bode well for future job opportunities.

Another trait that will only help Megan in her future endeavors? Her flexibility. As someone who adapts her leadership style based on who she is leading, Megan will find a home in any office. We will watch what happens after she graduates this academic year and root for her to reach PR stardom.

Q&A with Megan

How did you hear about Coastal?: Being a local, CCU has always been right down the road. I attended Charleston Southern University my freshman year and transferred to CCU my sophomore year because I was looking for an atmosphere that felt more like home.

Why did you come to Coastal?: I came to CCU because I was interested in getting involved on campus and meeting new people outside of the group of people I grew up with in Myrtle Beach. Coastal is full of so many different people with various backgrounds and I can now say I have friends all over the country.

Favorite professor: Wes Fondren, Ph.D.!! He is one of the best professors I have ever had and I feel blessed to have been in two of my major classes with him.

Favorite class: Wes Fondren's communication theory class. Each day in class I learned something new and it gave me a brand new perspective on the world and I use the tactics we learned in class almost every day in real life.

Favorite aspect of Coastal?: Friendly faculty and staff, truly feels like family because everyone knows everyone's names and I feel that our students remind our faculty and staff how much we appreciate their hard work daily.

Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?: The beach along with the fact that we are close to everything; shopping, entertainment, food, etc.

Clubs/Intramurals/other extracurricular activities involved in?: Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, Order of Omega Greek honor society, Student Government Association.

Do you work anywhere currently (either on or off campus)?: I currently work on campus as the student coordinator in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. I am also the Vice President of Public Relations for SGA which includes a discount on my tuition. In the summers I work at Tanger Outlet.

Plans after graduation?:  After graduation I hope to be moving to a larger city such as Charleston to pursue a career in PR and eventually have a family of my own.

What are your hobbies?: I enjoy reading thrillers, listening to Taylor Swift songs, going to the movies and spending time with my friends and family.

Do you have any hidden talents?: I can bake a peach cobbler from scratch.

Bonus Info: I bleed teal and absolutely love being able to represent Coastal!
