A solo exhibition by contemporary artist Margi Weir will be held at Coastal Carolina University's Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery from Monday, July 17, to Friday, Aug. 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a closing reception on Thursday, Aug. 24, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

The exhibition, featuring original works by Weir, is a combination of two different but related bodies of work. Both series are inspired by Weir's response to the world around her and use a creative process she calls "snap line." A snap line is made by dipping twine into thinned paint or ink and snapping the line onto the canvas to create lines and patterns. Weir says the snap line "suggests an event, an explosion, a reverberation, yet the over spray lends a softness to the line quality that reminds me of drypoint intaglio." Drypoint intaglio is a printmaking technique where an image is etched into a plate with a hard needle.

The pieces from the first body of work are created by repeating images on a computer to make tapestry-like patterns. These pieces are often enlarged and enhanced with acrylic paint, vinyl and resin on a canvas. The second body of work depicts the remains of ruined buildings that were once signifiers of culture. These pieces are created by using ink and wash drawings on rag paper.

Weir is an assistant professor of painting and drawing at Wayne State University in Detroit, where she currently resides. She earned a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the University of California at Los Angeles, a master's degree in painting from New Mexico State University, a bachelor's degree in painting from San Francisco Art Institute and a bachelor's degree in art history from Wheaton College. Weir has won many awards for her work, including the Celeste Prize in 2013 and first prize in the Contemporary Art Center of Las Vegas' Juried Exhibition in 2012.

The Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery is in Room 129 of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, located at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the main Conway campus. The gallery is dedicated to advancing the education of visual artists and cultivating the production, interpretation, and enjoyment of objects and images in society.
