Coastal Carolina University proposes to develop and provide a non-residential and residential based four-year post-secondary education program for young adults with intellectual disabilities.

The Coastal Carolina University LIFETM Program
  • This tuition-based program will provide students with the support and guidance necessary to navigate through this inclusion and emergent developmentally appropriate program within the college campus community.

  • Coastal Carolina University LIFETM program will enable students with intellectual disabilities the educational and social development opportunity to address four key primary areas:
    • academic enrichment,
    • socialization,
    • independent living skills, and
    • competitive or supported employment.

Specific Components of the Program
  • Developmental Core Courses
  • Work Experience
    • Career Exploration Apprenticeship
      • on-campus
    • Internships
      • on-campus and off-campus – job exploration and shadowing
  • LIFETM Portfolio
    • Compilation of documentation that shows inclusive representation of student’s development, growth, and completion of program
  • Certificate Program
  • On-going Assessment and Guidance each semester with a Personal Development Plan
    • Career interests and vocational skills
    • Academic development
    • Social development
    • Independent living
  • Peer Mentors
    • Academic Mentors
    • Social Mentors
    • Residential Mentors

Program Admissions Criteria
  • Demonstrate the knowledge, strategies, and techniques needed to read at a functional level
  • Demonstrate basic mathematical skills and ability to use a calculator
  • Agree to actively participate in ongoing assessments (such as cognitive, independent living skills, and others)
  • Demonstrate the potential and desire to be successfully employed


  • Must be between 18-24 years old
  • Have an intellectual disability (as defined by AAIDD)
  • Must have not met the requirements for and/or received a state high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Independently exhibits emotional stability, maturity, interest and motivation to participate in and pursue additional educational, employment, and life experiences through a  post-secondary program
