Coastal Carolina University's Horry County Mentoring Program is a school-based mentoring program between Coastal Carolina University and Horry County Schools to improve students' school performance and eventual high school graduation rates. This program is made possible through the support of the Dalton and Linda Floyd Family.

School-based mentoring is an effective youth development strategy, leading to better attitudes, attendance and performance in school, and improved peer relationships. (Herrera et al., 2007). Horry County Grades 4-12 mentors are trusted friends who are committed to seeing a child grow and develop. They may start out as lunch buddies, tutors or reading buddies, but they work to create a caring relationship that will encourage children to do their personal best and stay in school.

"Mentoring has been a great learning experience. The one thing I have learned…is that time and attention are the most effective ways to positively influence another life."

-Stephen J. Class of 2008, History
