“I am so appreciative that Pee Dee Elementary has had the opportunity to be a part
of the program. Yesterday was the first time most of the children with me had ever set foot on a college campus.
I am here to tell you they will never forget the outpouring of encouragement they received. The mentors, the
athletes, the cafeteria staff, faculty, and vendors all did their part to make our children feel like they fit
in and that college is an option for them. On a personal level I came away filled with hope. It is wonderful
to know that all of those people are concerned for our children's well being. Please know that you are truly
appreciated.”
—Ms. Kelly Covington, Elementary Curriculum Specialist, Pee Dee Elementary School
“Thank you for a wonderful Mentor day at Coastal. Students and mentors gain so much
from this wonderful experience. Thank you for supporting our students' education.”
—Ms. Eileen Patonay, Career Specialist, Forestbrook Middle School
“I just have to share this "caring heart" true story. Today, I met with a fourth grade
mentor. She shared that her mentee, a student at our school was not going to be able to go on the fourth grade
field trip to Charleston due to the lack of money. This wonderful CCU mentor went and baked cookies and sold them
on campus to raise the $31.00 for her mentee to go on the trip.
The CCU mentors are just great kids that are working with our kids. The mentors are the positive role models that
can connect with our students. Hopefully, the mentors can provide the much needed encouragement our kids need to
work hard toward achieving a brighter future.”
—Mrs. Gail Dale, Assistant Principal, Waccamaw Elementary School
“I have really enjoyed my experiences this year through the mentoring program.

“Brittany was a good mentor to me. She help me with things I need help with. She ask
question to see what I did in class. Ever time she came to my school she play with my friends and me. She came
ever day she need to. Brittany was nice when my birthday or holiday because she gave me present. I was so glad
she was my mentor. Thank for what she done.”
—Amber D, mentee of Brittany Hite, Mentor Award recipient, Class of 2010, Business Management and Marketing
“Brittany was a wonderful mentor for A. A has blossomed in the classroom since Brittany
became her mentor. A was very shy and spoke very little in class at the first of the year. Now A speaks up more,
joins classroom discussions, and volunteers to help others. I feel Brittany has had a major impact on A's academic
life as well as her social life.”
—Mrs. Susan Steele, 4th Grade Teacher, Waccamaw Elementary
