2008 MINI CCU SUMMER PROGRAM

The 2008 Mini CCU Summer Program sponsored by the Center for Education and Community at Coastal Carolina University.

Students: Rising 3rd through 9th Graders
Instructors: Coastal Faculty, Instructors, and Graduate Students, Horry County and Georgetown County School Teachers
Days: Monday-Friday
Dates: Program begins in weekly session June 9-13, June 16-20, June 23-27, July 7-11, July 14-18, July 21-25 and July 28-August 1
Times: Half-day Classes 9-noon or 1-4 p.m., Full-day Classes 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Cost: Half Day Classes $95 Full Day Classes $180 All Outdoor Adventure $210
Where: Coastal Carolina University's Coastal Science Center, Conway, South Carolina
Lunch: Students taking full-day classes or two 3 hour classes will need to bring a bag lunch.
After-Care: Morning Care 7:45-8:45 a.m. ($15 a week), After Care 4-5:30 p.m. ($25 a week), and Both ($35 a week)
Hands-on Interactive Fun Courses: Discoveries in Science, Theatre, Astronomy, Music: In Tune with the Ukulele, Visual Technology, Claymation, Golf, Exploration of Culture through Languages, Robotics, Outdoor Adventure, Animation, Mathletics: Learn Mathematics through Athletics, Tennis, Dance, Ecology/Biology, Marvelous World of Japanese Art and much more!

Parents, siblings, and friends are invited for the last half hour/hour of class on Friday to observe what the students have done during the week.

Fees:

  • Half-day classes: $95
  • Full-day classes: $180
  • All Outdoor Adventure classes: $210
  • Multiple Child Discount: first child pays rate/additional children 10% discount (cannot register online to receive discount)
  • Full-time Faculty/Staff 10% Discount: (cannot register online to receive discount)

Fees may have an additional fee associated with the course to accommodate for field trips.

Refunds:

Refunds will be made if withdrawal from a course is received in writing at least three working days prior to the start day of the course.  A $15 processing will be retained by the Center for Education and Community.  Failure to attend a class without notification or cancellation will not entitle a refund.  In the event that a course is cancelled by the Center for Education and Community, a full refund will be made to the participant.  Refund checks take approximately two weeks to process.

Foreign Language and Culture La Oruga muy Hambriento: The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Students will follow the very hungry caterpillar on a weeklong journey, while learning basic vocabulary, conversation, and grammatical structure which includes numbers, colors, foods, and days of the week, months, seasons, and life cycles. As a cultural aspect, the annual migration of Monarch butterflies between the US and Mexico will be covered throughout the week’s activities.
Grades 3-5

Life Sports Youth Golf
Conducted at Coastal’s Quail Creek Golf Course, this class is an introduction to the skills and nature of youth golf. Students learn about the rules, history, and etiquette of the game, as well as the basic techniques and skills to play successfully. Individual and group instruction is provided for the skills of putting, chipping, pitching, and full swings. The class includes fun games and activities designed to develop skills and confidence in golf, as well as daily “reflections” of the experience. The class can accommodate novice and students that are more experienced. The class culminates in a day of fun contests and awards.

 Youth Tennis
This class is a fun introduction to the game of tennis. Students learn about the rules, history, and etiquette of the games, as well as the basic techniques and skills to enjoy the sport. Individual and group instruction is provided and the class includes fun games and activities designed to develop skill and confidence in tennis. The class includes many variations of match play, and can accommodate both beginning and intermediate level players. The class culminates in a day of fun contests, match play, and awards.

Performing Arts In Tune with the Ukulele
Students will learn beginning ukulele techniques such as tuning, holding and strumming the ukulele correctly. They will learn some chords and begin playing some simple songs. There will be a ukulele provided for class use only. Students are encouraged to bring their own ukulele. The class will culminate with a recital for family and friends.

Science Loops, Swirls, and Drops: Physics in Motion
Prepare yourself for loops, swirls, and drops. Use your imagination as students explore the world of physics through bridge and roller coaster technology. Through the process of building their own bridge, concepts will be taught to allow students to think like an architect. Gravity, G Force, and Newton’s Laws will be taught to allow students to discover how roller coasters function through scientific theories.

Visual Arts and Crafts What It’s Fake Food!: Japanese Art of Gyodan and more
Get your creative taste buds ready for some delectable treats! The students are introduced to Japanese culture throughvarious forms of Japanese art. A focus will also be on the art of Gyodan, where professionals in this field sculpt fake food out of plastic, and display them in restaurants. The students will create their favorite foods with Crayola Model Magi and tempera paint. The fake food will be made with such care and realism that you will have to be reminded to look but not taste. All fake food is not edible but lots of fun to make. Come enjoy a week of Japenese culture and Art

English/Literature Effectively Writing with Style and Flair - Part I
Students will learn to incorporate higher-level vocabulary, vary sentence structure, and catch a reader’s attention with dramatic openings and closings while applying other specific writing tools and strategies. Increase your passion for writing, improve your writing skills and prepare systematically for standardize writing prompts while increasing your vocabulary.
Grades 6-9

Students will work cooperatively to collect real-life data in a hands-on interactive approach. They will use data to help formulate mathematical equations that will allow them to predict and analyze data. The students will use a variety of sports equipment and physical action to help fuse together the real world data with a modern technological study. Sports, activity and mathematics join forces through this exciting experience.

Performing Arts Puppetry and Beyond
Learn basic puppetry and more. Explore puppet basics, handling care of puppets and learn about the various puppet types. Write a puppet skit/play and plan out the costuming and backgrounds for your own puppet production.

Science Ecology: Animals, Critters, and their Habitats
Through fun activities, such as caring for your own plant, taking nature walks, making bug collections, and discovering a new world through the eyes of the organisms, students will learn about the relationships between plants and animals and how they live and work together in an ecosystem. Students will explore the impact of environmental waste on plants, animals and their environments. All aspects of reduce, reuse, recycle, will be addressed through creative posters, crafts, and activities. By the end of this fun session, students will have a better understanding and appreciation for the beauty that is Mother Nature. Additional fee required for a field trip to Waccatee Zoo.

Social Studies in action will provide students with engaging activities that will make history come alive and increase their critical thinking, analysis and application. Students will learn to read and interpret maps as they trace voyages, expeditions, and journeys across the globe.

Visual Technology Music Video Production
This class is an introduction to the art of digital video production. Students will work collaboratively in teams to design, shoot, edit, export and premiere an original music video based on a song of their choice. Students will learn how to operate digital video camcorders, capture footage to a PC, and export an edited composition to DVD.

Foreign Language and Culture El Pez Arco Iris: The Rainbow Fish
Students will follow the Rainbow Fish as they discover more about the Spanish language; including the names of family and friends, emotions, sports and activities. Culture specific sports and activities will also be discussed. Students will be introduced to and play activities that are unique to the Hispanic culture.

Small hands can create such imaginery fun. Learn the basics of puppetry through creating your very own hand puppet. Write a puppet skit/play and plan out the costuming and backgrounds for your own puppet production.

Science Nature’s Beast: Sharks, Crocodiles, and Alligators . . . Do they Attack?
Test your fear factor gauge. Learn about freshwater and saltwater fish and reptiles of the world through activities, role-playing, and field trip discoveries. An introduction of coastal marine and freshwater systems will allow students to discover the local organisms. This class will dissect a shark or reptile to explore their amazing system structure. Additional fee required for the field trip to Ripley’s Aquarium.

This class blends exciting adventure and outdoor based activities with experiential and environmental learning at Playcard Environmental Education Center. Students try outdoor initiatives and games, challenge and ropes course elements, survival fishing, archery, and kayaking and other outdoor activities. Experiential learning activities include animal tracking, edible plants, snakes and terrestrial life. The course culminates with a supervised overnight camping trip at Playcard Environmental Education Center. For the overnight camping trips, we would appreciate parents to sign-up as chaperons. The cost for this class is $210.00 per participant for the week. This includes the additional cost for the overnight stay at Playcard Environmental Education Center.

Through fun activities such as caring for your own plant, taking nature walks, making bug collections, fishbanks, water chemistry, recycling and dissecting students will learn about the relationships between plants and animals and non-living things in the environment. Learn to care for the environment by learning about reducing, reusing and recycling whild on a field trip to a local recycling center. By the end of this fun session, you wshould have a better understanding and appreciation for the beauty that is Mother Nature. This class will dissect a fish to explore their amazing system structure.

Studenta will learn about school activities in the Hispanic cultures.

Are you prepared to shake, rattle, and roll? Prepare yourself for an explosion of science and fun as you design and make your own volcano. Spin yourself dizzy as students learn about and create their own tornadoes. All natural disasters and their impacts will be addressed through fun activities and creations.

Social Studies Voyages, Expeditions & Journeys: Social Studies in Action
Social Studies in action will provide students with engaging activities that will make history come alive and increase their critical thinking, analysis and application. Students will learn to read and interpret maps as they trace voyages, expeditions, and journeys across the globe.

Visual Arts and Crafts Advanced Animation
Students will explore more complex features of animation. This includes using 3-D space, tweening, motion path, transformations, pegs, and cutout characters. The students will also have and opportunity to work on tutorial storyboard and develop characters. Students will develop their own animation short.

Life Sports Youth Golf
Conducted at Coastal’s Quail Creek Golf Course, this class is an introduction to the skills and nature of youth golf. Students learn about the rules, history, and etiquette of the game, as well as the basic techniques and skills to play successfully. Individual and group instruction is provided for the skills of putting, chipping, pitching, and full swings. The class includes fun games and activities designed to develop skills and confidence in golf, as well as daily “reflections” of the experience. The class can accommodate novice and students that are more experienced. The class culminates in a day of fun contests and awards.

 Youth Tennis
This class is a fun introduction to the game of tennis. Students learn about the rules, history, and etiquette of the games, as well as the basic techniques and skills to enjoy the sport. Individual and group instruction is provided and the class includes fun games and activities designed to develop skill and confidence in tennis. The class includes many variations of match play, and can accommodate both beginning and intermediate level players. The class culminates in a day of fun contests, match play, and awards.

Outdoor Adventure Outdoor Adventure Junior
This class blends exciting adventure and outdoor based activities with experiential and environmental learning at Playcard Environmental Education Center. Students try outdoor initiatives and games, challenge and ropes course elements, survival fishing, archery, and kayaking and other outdoor activities. Experiential learning activities include animal tracking, edible plants, snakes and terrestrial life. The course culminates with a supervised off-campus kayak trip in ponds and wetlands. The course culminates with a supervised overnight camping trip at Playcard Environmental Education Center. For the overnight camping trips, we would appreciate parents to sign-up as chaperons. The cost for this class is $210.00 per participant for the week. This includes the additional cost for the overnight stay at Playcard Environmental Education Center.

Performing Arts Junior Puppet Master
Small hands can create such imaginery fun. Learn the basics of puppetry through creating your very own hand puppet. Write a puppet skit/play and plan out the costuming and backgrounds for your own puppet production.

Science Loops, Swirls, and Drops: Physics in Motion
Prepare yourself for loops, swirls, and drops. Use your imagination as students explore the world of physics through bridge and roller coaster technology. Through the process of building their own bridge, concepts will be taught to allow students to think like an architect. Gravity, G Force, and Newton’s Laws will be taught to allow students to discover how roller coasters function through scientific theories.

Students will learn the basics of Claymation and stop motion animation. Students will creat storyboard, develop characters, build sets, and edit their own Claymation short. Students will develop their own Claymation short.
