SUMMER ARTS ACADEMY

This is a Summer School too cool to miss!

The Center for Education and Community at Coastal Carolina University is proud to offer a challenging, yet fun, program of Fine Arts in the areas of Music, Visual Art and Performing Arts. This is a residential program staffed by university faculty, certified teachers and professional performers and artists, who all come together with one goal in mind, to teach interested, young people who truly have a love for their particular form of art. Coastal Carolina University's Summer Arts Academy has been designed to meet South Carolina regulations criteria for artistically gifted programs. The music academy, which includes vocal, band instruments, and string instruments and performing arts academy are open to rising 6th to 12th grade students and the visual arts academy is open to rising 7th to 12th grade students. The fees and length of programs vary with each subject matter.

June 7-14

Performing Arts Academy (Adobe PDF iconapplication)
Performing arts director, Thom Penn, a professional actor and performing arts instructor with a Master of Fine Arts, will return this summer with super new ideas and techniques. Thom is a member of Actor's Equity Association and is certified as an actor-combatant by the Society of American Fight Directors. Thom's instructional team will include Andy Penn, visiting artist from Kansas and Steve Earnest of the Theater Department at Coastal Carolina University, as well as other performing arts professionals.

Students will learn the art of character development, how to use proven acting techniques and the value of relaxation. They will participate and have fun with theater games and improvisation. Acting abilities will improve as they develop skills through monologues, group scene study, stage movement and combat. Don't miss this opportunity to enhance your abilities and showcase your talent at the week's end performance.


Music Academy (Adobe PDF iconapplication)
Music academy director, Dr. Tonya Propst, music education and high brass instructor at Coastal Carolina University as well as a former band director in the Horry County Schools, will present a comprehensive, music education experience unparalleled by previous year's camps.

Visual Arts Academy (Adobe PDF iconapplication)
Dr. Susan J. Slavik, professor of Visual Arts at Coastal Carolina University and the 2005 South Carolina Art Education Association Higher Education Art Educator of the Year will direct a challenging and inspiring program for middle and high school students, taught by CCU faculty, professional artists, and exceptional educators.

Students will learn to think "outside the box" as they develop advanced skills in visual communication, portfolio development, and the manipulation of two and three-dimensional media.

Visual Arts classes will include dynamic offerings in drawing, portraiture, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and graphic design. Special events will include group projects, museum field trips, sand sculpture, and art Olympics.

A culminating exhibit of student art works will be held in the Rebecca Randall Bryant Art Gallery in the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.
