Coffee Talk: Your Online Course Discussions Are Neither Online Nor a Discussion. Discuss.: Building Engaging Online Discussions
Why is it hard to get students engaged in discussions in my online course? Engaging students in online discussion is more than just posting a question. First, you need to understand that many students are passive learners and need to learn to be participatory. Understanding what types of questions will solicit more than a yes, no, or I agree or disagree responses and how to write engaging questions takes practice. Developing roles and rubrics that assist in the process of engaging students will also be covered. This session will keep you from going verklempt and asking students to discuss.
At the end of the session faculty will:
• Compare passive learning vs. participatory learning
• Establish rules for discussion in your course
• Create engaging questions and a modified rubric
• Develop roles for discussion
