As a teaching institution, Coastal Carolina University recognizes the significant importance that excellence in teaching plays in the life of a university. Excellence in teaching impacts not only the quality of learning that takes place at the university, but also impacts such areas as student recruitment, retention, and graduation.

The Center for Effective Teaching and Learning (CETL) is charged with the responsibility of supporting faculty members in their work as teachers, taking a leading role in offering support for faculty members in areas related to instruction.

In support of the Center for Effective Teaching and Learning, the Technology in Education to Advance Learning (TEAL) Lab offers instructional technology services to improve student learning by integrating technology in the teaching and learning process. A principle component of this is our Technology Training Program.

  • Hours of operation - The professional staff of the TEAL Lab is generally available from 8 AM - 5 PM on weekdays. Student assistants are available on weeknights and Sunday evenings to assist by phone. The central phone number to call is 349-2836.

Our facilities in University Hall provide faculty and other teaching staff an opportunity to explore technology-based teaching. CETL staff members can assist with

  • teaching strategies using technology
  • course management for Blackboard (WebCT) , Coastal's online course tool
  • training and assistance with development and maintenance of faculty web sites
  • one-on-one and group training on software and hardware, including smart classroom and videoconferencing classroom hardware
  • reviews of new technology products

The TEAL Technology Lab offers

  • computers in UHAL 221 with Internet access, Office 2003 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and Publisher), Dreamweaver, Flash, Adobe Acrobat Professional, and Respondus
  • studio computers with Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, ImageReady, After Effects, and Sorenson Squeeze (for audio and video compression)
  • laptops on a first-come, first-served basis for your use in technology-enhanced classes
  • a document and photograph scanner with document feeder
  • a digital camera and digital video camera for signout
  • instructor/trainer podium with laptop, sound system, electronic white board, and ceiling mount projector in UHAL 221 and 228
