2008 Call for Proposals

General Information

The SOTL program began in 2004 and has so far provided many faculty members with support to do research about teaching and student learning. As more faculty become active in SOTL research, many have envisioned larger scale, more comprehensive projects as possibilities. The CETL would like to facilitate these large-impact projects, and we have begun offering a large-project track for the SOTL grant program.

Individual awards will have an overall limit of $3,500 per project, while large-scale awards (projects that involve three or more faculty and more than one course) will have a limit of $7,500. Funds may cover individual faculty stipends at a limit of $1,500 as well as materials/supplies, technology-related purchases, and remuneration for student assistants.

Awardees will be expected to present the results of their research on campus at a beginning-of-semester Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Symposium, usually one year from the time of the award. Awardees will also submit an abstract and two-page (minimum!) summary of the project and the results.

Eligibility

All full-time Coastal Carolina University faculty members are invited to submit proposals for SOTL grants. Projects involving collaboration among faculty members are strongly encouraged. Projects involving collaborations between departments are also strongly encouraged.

Criteria for Awards

Grant applications will be evaluated on the quality of proposed scholarship and its potential contribution to the advancement of teaching and learning. Though the scholarship must be research-based, the basis may be broadly defined. Projects may be qualitative, quantitative, or combine elements of both. Projects that study student learning in core curriculum courses or that study how course changes affect student performance on exit exams are encouraged. The grant requires systematic investigation of effects, interpretation of results, and dissemination to peers both within Coastal Carolina University and beyond in an appropriate scholarly publication or presentation.

SOTL Resources

Faculty members interested in the different types of SOTL research may consult several excellent resources available on the web. Several or these resources are listed on the main SOTL webpage. Of particular interest is the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, an early proponent of SOTL research. Its CASTL website contains many resources and examples and an annotated bibliography of SOTL research.

The Kimbel Library has assembled a bibliography of SOTL Resources, which is available through ChantSource.

Another good resource is the article by Craig Nelson, "Doing It: Examples of Several of the Different Genres of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning", published in the The Journal on Excellence in College Teaching. The article also has an extensive bibliography about doing SOTL research.

Application Procedure

Calls for proposals are announced each fall and spring with concording grant award periods.

During the application period, a faculty member applying for a grant should:

  1. Formally apply for the grant following the guidelines in the current semester's Call for Proposals identifying the nature of their proposed study using the proposal template (this template is in Word format; please right-click on this link and Save Target As... to your computer to use it).
  2. Submit the proposal by email to lkeiner@coastal.edu, and submit the signature page as a hard copy to to the CETL (207 University Hall).
  3. Fill out the Research Projects Containing Human Subjects application packet. Submit a hard copy of this form to the CETL.

The proposals will be reviwed by a faculty committee, consisting of previous SOTL grantees. You will be notified after a couple of weeks as to the status of your application.
