The Center
for Marine and Wetland Studies at Coastal Carolina University was
established in 1989 by the Horry County Higher Education Commission
to facilitate applied and basic research on the unique natural environments
of the Grand Strand area and the state of South Carolina. The Center,
which is affiliated within the College of Natural and Applied Sciences,
continues to expand its mission within the tripartite framework
of research, environmental education, and public/university extension.
Participation in these activities has carried Center faculty, staff
and students far beyond the Grand Strand to other states and around
the world.
