Summer Arts Academy offered in June at Coastal Carolina

February 23, 2005

Coastal Carolina Universitys Division of Academic Outreach will conduct the 2005 Coastal Summer Arts Academy during June for middle and high school students interested in intensive study in music, visual arts or dramatic arts.

The fees for the three programs range from $435 to $550 and includes room and board, use of campus facilities and all activities provided during the camp.

The Music Academy will be held June 12 to 18 and will give students the opportunity to participate in the Coastal Summer Arts Band, the Summer Arts Chorus for choral students and Sea Strings for string students. Auditions for placement will be June 12. Jim Tully, director of bands at Coastal, will direct the Music Academy.

During the Visual Arts Academy, scheduled for June 19 to 25, students will receive instruction in sketching, painting and sculpture, as well as explore the art of design with glass, mosaic and more; an open art exhibit will be held on June 26 to display the students works. Reatha Wilkins, art instructor at Carolina Forest High School, will direct the program.

The Dramatic Arts Academy will be held June 12 to 19 and will offer lessons in character development, improvisation, monologues, group scene study, stage movement, combat and the value of relaxation. The students will present a performance on June 19 to showcase what theyve learned. Thom Penn, a professional actor and performing arts instructor at CCU, will direct the program.

Musicians, artists, artisans, performers and educators from Coastal and the region will give instruction for the three programs.

The Coastal Summer Arts Academy has been designed to meet South Carolina criteria for programs for artistically gifted students.
