Two students named drum majors at Coastal Carolina

November 30, 2006

Two students have been chosen to share the role of drum major of the 2007 Spirit of the Chanticleer Marching Band at Coastal Carolina University.

Kyle Hughes of Shallotte, N.C., who returns for his second year as drum major, and Allison Mitchell of Rock Hill were selected to co-lead the band after a competitive audition process. Drum majors are the central figures in the student leadership, morale and motivation of the band, according to James Tully, director of bands at CCU.

Hughes, a junior majoring in music, was drum major of the West Brunswick High School marching band in Shallotte, where he also played trumpet in the concert band. He is a member of CCU's symphonic and jazz bands.

Mitchell, a 2006 graduate of Northwestern High School where she served as drum major and a member of the clarinet section, is a marine science major and member of Coastal's symphonic band.
