Coastal to host honor band and scholarship festival
Coastal's bands will also perform in the Coastal Spectrum2 concert Friday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. Both concerts are free and open to the public.
The festival will be conducted by renowned composer Richard Saucedo and will include several of his compositions and arrangements. They include "Rhythm Dance" and Saucedo's arrangement of "Finale to Symphony #3" by Gustav Mahler. Other works to be performed include "Suite from Lincolnshire Posy" by Grainger, arranged by Jonnie Vinson, "Air and "Dance" by W. Francis McBeth, as well as "The Boys of Wexford" by Sammy Nestico.
Students are selected for the honor band based on recommendation of their high school band director. Students participating in the event rehearse together for two days prior to the public concert. During the weekend, seniors are offered an opportunity to audition for music and band scholarships to CCU. Scholarship winners will be announced during the honor band concert on Saturday.
Saucedo is currently in his 21st year as director of bands and music technology at Carmel High School in Carmel, Ind. Under his direction, Carmel bands have received numerous state and national honors in the areas of concert, jazz and marching.
