Benefit performance of 'Vagina Monologues' set at CCU

January 29, 2008

A benefit performance of the award-winning "The Vagina Monologues" will be held on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. The play is part of Coastal Carolina University's 2008 Celebration of Inquiry and will benefit Citizens Against Spouse Abuse, the Rape Crisis Center and V-Day.

Directed by Robin Russell of CCU's theatre faculty, the play is being held in conjunction with V-day, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. Through V-Day campaigns held on Valentine's Day around the world, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of "The Vagina Monologues" to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups.

The cast includes CCU students Becky Henegar, Jen Hartman, Caroline Cuseo, Lauren Sloan, Caroline Davis, Kim Daniel and Brandy Ward. Faculty and staff members in the play are Russell, Melissa-Anne Blizzard Hall and Anne Monk.

General admission is $10, seniors $5, and students and faculty free with CCU ID. This production is recommended for mature audiences only.

Written by Eve Ensler, "The Vagina Monologues" is a powerful Obie Award-winning play in which various women share their views about sex, love, rape, birth, and other aspects of life. In 2006, more than 2,700 V-Day benefit events were held by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls.

A benefit silent auction is also planned in the Wheelwright lobby featuring restaurant and store gift certificates and other items.
