'New Prints' exhibition to open at Coastal's art gallery

"New Prints: Winter 2008," an exhibit of 45 works from the International Print Center of New York, will open March 13 and run through April 17 at the Rebecca Randall Bryan Gallery at Coastal Carolina University. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

From the International Print Center New York (IPCNY), the exhibit consists of 45 works by 34 artists, representing a cross-section of some of the most exceptional printmaking today.

The public is invited to the opening reception on Thursday, March 13 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Visual arts professor Treelee MacAnn will give a free public talk about printmaking processes during the "Art for Lunch" presentation on Thursday, April 10 from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m.

The exhibition can be viewed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Rebecca Randall Bryan Gallery is located inside the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

Works by 34 artists are included in the show, representing a cross-section of the country. Twenty-four work in locations across the country and broad including California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Washington, Canada, and Japan.

Highlights include Alyson Shotz's "Three Steps Closer Than Infinity," a suite of three lithographs on mirrorized mylar; Ethan Green's "Charlie Rose," a blur created by seven screenprints transparent sheets of Plexiglas, stacked one on top another; Megan Yee's "Wallpaper" installation, which elegantly combines white rodents with a Victorian-style floral design; and David Opdyke's "The One," in which tiny drawn images of a populated landscape form a larger image intimately familiar to us all.

A curatorial essay by Brett Littman will accompany the exhibition.

New Prints: Winter 2008 is the 26th presentation of the New Prints Program. Created to provide greater exposure for brand new prints by artists at all stages of their careers, the New Prints Program is a series of juried exhibitions organized by IPCNY four times each season.

The New Prints program is the core of IPCNY's exhibition programming. New Prints 2000 launched the program in September 2000. To date, these 26 exhibitions have included work from nearly 700 artists and 150 presses across the country and abroad.
