Coastal Carolina University trustees approve bond request

At its quarterly meeting today, Coastal Carolina University's board of trustees approved a request for specific building and renovation projects on campus. The bond proposal must be approved by the S.C. Budget and Control Board, which meets later this month.

Funds provided through the proposed bond issue will be designated to the following campus projects: parking and infrastructure, $4 million; an addition to Kingston Hall, $3 million; remodeling Kimbel Library to install an Information Commons area, $6 million; construction of the R. Cathcart Smith Science Center Annex, $15 million; and construction of an Activity/Recreation Center, $26 million.

The board also voted pursue a lease for the former Academy of Arts, Sciences and Technology property on 79th Avenue in Myrtle Beach and to pursue the purchase of 10 acres located on S.C. 544 near the campus. The board also approved leasing the Elvington House on campus from the Student Housing Foundation for a one-year period beginning Sept. 15, 2008.

The board approved tenure for Donald S. Sloan, professor of music and chair of the Department of Music. English professor Peter Lecouras was promoted to full professor.

A special meeting of the Audit, Finance and Facilities committees will be held June 19 at 1 p.m. to discuss the proposed budget and set tuition for 2008-2009.
