Coastal Carolina University offers Homecoming concert

October 28, 2009

Coastal Carolina Universitys POP 101 and World Music Ensembles will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3 in Wheelwright Auditorium to celebrate the Universitys Homecoming Week.

General admission is $9; Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) members, alumni and senior citizens (65+) are $7; teens (11-17) are $3; and children (10 and under) are admitted free, but must be accompanied by an adult.

The homecoming concert will feature the Universitys best student rock 'n' roll musicians. The show will include performances by the Universitys POP 101 ensemble, the African Drum and Dance ensemble, C-PAN (steel drum band) and the Brazilian ensemble.

POP 101 is the Universitys contemporary ensemble, directed by Dan OReilly, instructor of music. The dynamic group performs popular music in a rock band context, and includes students who play guitar, bass drums, keyboard and horns, as well as vocalists. POP 101 will feature selections from the Woodstock Tribute show from last semester and audience favorites.

C-PAN is the Universitys steel drum band, which is a trademark of Caribbean music. Steel drum bands, which originated in Trinidad, use 55-gallon oil drums that comprise a family of soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices. The concert will feature selections from C-PAN along with the African Drum and Dance ensemble and the Brazilian ensemble. These groups make up CCUs World Music Ensembles which provide a diverse presentation of world music.
