Coastal Carolina University names new Swain Scholars
The new Swain Scholars are Alex Ham, a health promotion major from Mt. Arlington, N.J.; Allyson League, an exercise sports science major from Baltimore, Md.; Miguel Mendoza, a biology major from Guanajuato, Mexico; and Thomas Niemela, an exercise and sport science major from Richmond, Va.
Swain's gift, one of the largest in University history, is designated largely for science scholarships, with a particular emphasis on health science programs.
Each Swain Scholar receives a $5,000 scholarship annually. To be eligible, students must be sophomores or juniors who maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average. Interest and participation in community health-related outreach activities also are a consideration in the selection process.
In addition to scholarships, the Swain gift supports new and expanded laboratories and equipment for teaching and research.
