CCU Theatre presents Harold Pinters Old Times

February 21, 2011

Coastal Carolina University Theatre will perform Old Times, a contemporary play by British Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24-Feb. 26 and March 2-5, with an additional performance at 3 p.m. March 5, in the Edwards Theatre of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

Old Times, first performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in London in 1971, follows Kate and her filmmaker husband Deeley in their peaceful life in a seaside farmhouse. When Kates friend, Anna, a roommate from 20 years ago, comes to visit, the couples peace is disrupted. As the past is reminisced, memories and reality are blurred between the three in this story that muddies the past and the present with shattering consequences.

Pinter is an original, says CCU director Sandra Shackelford. He has a very strong style in language very edgy, with lots of things going on in the long pauses and silences.

Shackelford says the cast will be making their collective debut in a major role with Old Times: Mary Ellen Cameron, a junior musical theatre major, will be playing Anna; Mark Jurosko, a junior theatre major from Myrtle Beach, will be Deeley; and Erin Pinky Toman, a musical theatre major from Maryland, will be playing Kate.

I think the audience will be moved and come away with a lot of questions, says Shackelford. Old Times is about memory and how everyone remembers the same event in a different way. You never know whos telling the truth, and thats how Pinters mind works.
