16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence event set

November 15, 2011

Coastal Carolina University is hosting a drop-in reception highlighting the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence on Monday, Nov. 28, from 3 to 7 p.m. The event will be held at the Womens Resource Center in the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration (Room 313) and is free and open to the public.

The reception will feature a variety of local speakers discussing violence against women and human-trafficking controversy. Keynote speakers include Candace Lively, assistant solicitor in the Horry County Solicitor's Office, and Nelson Hardwick, S.C. representative and an advocate to strengthen the S.C. Statute on Human Trafficking.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence campaign is an international effort started by the first Womens Global Leadership Institute in 1991. Since then, the campaign has raised awareness of the human rights issues at stake when violence is directed toward women.

The reception is sponsored by CCU's Womens Resource Center and the University's Womens and Gender Studies Program. Representatives from the following organizations will also be on hand: ZONTA, the international womens advocacy organization; the Rape Crisis Centers of Horry and Georgetown counties; Eastern Carolina Coalition Against Human Trafficking; The Childrens Recovery Center; Citizens Against Spouse Abuse; and the Family Justice Center of Georgetown.
