CCU hosts Honor Band and Scholarship Festival

Coastal Carolina University will host the fifth annual Coastal Honor Band and Scholarship Festival, a three-day event from Dec. 1 to Dec 3. The Festival Wind Ensemble and the Coastal Honor Band, composed of more than 100 high school students from South Carolina and the eastern United States, will present a finale concert at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3 in Wheelwright Auditorium.

Spectrum2 Concert, which is part of the Scholarship Festival, will be performed at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1, in Wheelwright Auditorium.

The Symphonic Band will also perform as part of the Coastal Honor Band and Scholarship Festival at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, in Wheelwright Auditorium.

The general admission for these two concerts is $9; children 10 and under are admitted free. CCU and Horry Georgetown Technical College students receive one $3 ticket per valid ID. CCU and HGTC faculty and staff receive two $3 tickets per valid ID.

As part of the festival, CCU music professors will also present a faculty recital at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3 in Wheelwright Auditorium. This recital features the regions most talented instrumental recitalists. The music faculty will perform solos, duets, and chamber music from the Renaissance period through the 21st century.

The admission for this recital is free with a ticket and open to the public.

The Festival Wind Ensemble, directed by Andrew Boysen, features student musicians from grades 8-12, selected by recommendation of their high school band director. Students participating in the event rehearse together for two days prior to the public concert. During the weekend, seniors are offered an opportunity to audition for music and band scholarships to CCU. Scholarship winners will be announced during the honor band concert on Saturday.

The Coastal Honor Band will be conducted by Bob Buckner, director of bands emeritus at Western Carolina University.
