Authors will discuss, sign books at Coastal

December 6, 2001

Susan Hoffer McMillan, author of Myrtle Beach and Conway in Vintage Postcards, and Dr. Lee Minton, author of The King's Highway and Some Detours, will talk about their recently published books on Friday, Dec. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. in Wall Auditorium on the Coastal Carolina University campus. The authors will also sign copies of the books at a reception following their presentations. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Waccamaw Center for Cultural and Historical Studies.

McMillan's book was published in September 2001 by Arcadia Publishing Company of Charleston as part of a series of books depicting early South Carolina postcards. McMillan has collected more than 200 postcards, many of them rare, and has written brief commentaries about each one. Many early Myrtle Beach area hotels and landmarks are included as well as many street scenes, churches and homes in Conway and other Horry County locations. McMillan's presentation will include a slide show of many postcards from the book.

The Kings Highway and Some Detours is a memoir recounting the adventurous life Minton has led since retiring from his Nashville ophthalmology practice at age 50. Although his primary residence is Pawleys Island, he has also lived in London, England, and traveled extensively throughout the world. In addition to his observations of life on Pawleys Island, Minton's recollections include fascinating encounters with British nobles and artists, archaeological digs in Italy, Crete and Mallorca as well as travel stories from Nepal, Turkey, Egypt, Alaska and the Galapagos Islands.
