Summer Arts Academy to be held at CCU

April 22, 2014

The 2014 Summer Arts Academy held on the Coastal Carolina University campus kicks off in June for middle and high school students wishing to participate in an intensive study of music, visual arts or performing arts. Program fees range from $495 to $825 and include on-campus lodging and meals for students. Registration is still open.

The Music Arts Academy, directed by CCU music professor Tonya Propst, is scheduled for June 7 through 13. This workshop is designed for students of all ability levels and focuses on performance instruction, comprehensive musicianship, playing techniques, music appreciation and repertoire development. Students will rehearse and perform in sectionals, small ensembles and large ensembles. The camp is available for students who are rising 8th graders through rising 12th graders. Ensembles include instruction in band, orchestra, and choir. Tuition is $495.

The Performing Arts Academy runs June 15 through 27. The academy is rooted in process, technique and truthful storytelling. Students will develop characters and hone their craft. In line with top acting school practices, the classes cover techniques for engaging inner life, accessing imagination, improving physical and vocal performance skills. Come be a part of a blend of individually challenging events, ensemble building and fun. Attendees will learn about the technical aspects of film acting in CCU's television studio. Tuition is $750.

The Summer Arts Academy for Visual Arts is broken into two sections. Tuition for students currently in grades 6 through 8 is $750; the program is slightly shorter, running from June 15 through 25. Students in grades 9 through 11 pay $825; dates run from June 15 through 27. A supply fee of $70 is also required.

The Summer Arts Academy for Visual Arts provides a challenging and inspiring program for middle and high school students, taught by CCU faculty, professional artists, and exceptional local certified art educators. This year's theme is "Capture the Moment!" The program is designed to introduce artistic technique above and beyond what the participants would have learned in their classroom setting at school. Students will be assisted in conceptualizing their ideas, in addition to creating the visual work.

Participants will have the opportunity to develop advanced skills in visual communication, portfolio development and manipulation of two and three-dimensional media. Visual Arts courses will offer experiences with two-dimensional and three dimensional media as well as graphic design. Students will also engage in collaborative projects and art inspired games. The culminating event will be a gallery exhibit of artwork at the Rebecca Randall Bryan Gallery and a duct tape fashion show.
