'Art Songs & Arias' offered at Coastal Carolina University
The concert, which is free, will be in the Recital Hall of the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.
Sloan, director of music at Trinity Episcopal Church in Myrtle Beach and a Coastal alumna, joins Philip Powell, chair of Coastal's Department of Performing Arts, in an afternoon of vocal chamber music. The soprano has performed extensively with orchestras including the Long Bay Symphony.
Powell, associate professor of music, joined the faculty in 1988. He has served as president of the Coastal Concert Association, music director of the Festival of Music and Art at Pawleys Island, founding director of the Musicale de Geneve series and a member of the Board of Directors of the Long Bay Symphony. Locally, he has performed with the South Carolina Symphony Orchestra, the Jupiter Symphony and is a frequent soloist with the Long Bay Symphony.
Powell earned a bachelor's degree in music from the University of Oklahoma and the master's and doctorate degrees from Indiana University where he was a student of the late Michel Block, an internationally acclaimed pianist.
