High school math whizzes compete in annual meet at CCU

Two hundred and forty-two high school students competed in the 25th annual CCU-Verizon Math Contest March 26 on the Coastal Carolina University campus. Twenty-three South Carolina schools, one North Carolina school and one Tennessee school took part in this year’s event.

High schools that competed in the 2004 contest were: AC Flora, Andrews, Aynor, Ben Lippen, Carolina Forest, Carvers Bay, Conway, Creek Bridge, Crestwood, Dobyns-Bennett (Tenn.), Emmanuel Christian, Goose Creek, Hemingway, Hoggard (N.C.), Lakewood, Loris, Mullins, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Socastee, Spring Valley, Summerville, Waccamaw, Wando and Williston-Elko.

School competition winners by category were:

Small schools - Level 1: Ben Lippen

Large schools – Level 1: Summerville

Small schools – Level 2: Ben Lippen

Large schools – Level 2: Hoggard (N.C.)

Overall winner: AC Flora

Students in the competition were given written examinations. Level I questions were taken from Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry; Level II questions were taken from Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. Winners received $100 gift cards for first place, $75 gift cards for second place and $50 gift cards for third place in each category. All competing students and their sponsors received specially-designed T-shirts. ###
