Welcome!
If you are interested in a career in Communication – or in any profession that requires excellent communication skills – you’ve come to the right place! Coastal Carolina University’s Department of Communication offers a comprehensive program of study that prepares students for jobs in industry, government, health, media, entertainment, and education. You’ll also gain a sound foundation for advanced study in graduate or professional school.
As a Communication major, you’ll receive a solid liberal arts grounding in the history, structure, process, and functions of human communication. You’ll also develop the ability to integrate critical, theoretical, and ethical perspectives in the discipline and apply them to their professional, personal, and civic lives.
Working with a faculty advisor, you’ll map out an individualized program of study that caters to your specific interests and career aspirations. That program may involve one or more internships, collaboration on team projects, study abroad, course-related work for private and civic organizations or initiatives such as the Heart Fund or Coalition against Human Trafficking. You can select courses that take place our new video lab and gain valuable expertise working on Coastal’s student newspaper or internet radio station. In your senior year you can write a thesis that gives you an edge in your post-graduate job search.
More than 400 Coastal students currently major in Communication; over 100 others have chosen Communication or Journalism as their minor. In 2010 we will add faculty with special expertise in Health Communication, Intercultural Communication, Oral Communication, Public Relations, Digital Media, and Organizational Communication. These professionals will join a team of scholars and industry experts who will expand your intellectual horizons as they prepare you for a rewarding career in Communication.
Sincerely,
Communication Faculty
