Policy on Students Engaging In or Threatening Harm to Self
Due to the University’s concern for student welfare, those who have engaged in or threatened harm to self will be required to follow this protocol:
- Upon release from a current or subsequent hospital, the student is required to contact Coastal Carolina University Counseling Services prior to returning to campus for class or entering the residence halls. Counseling Services can be reached at 843.349.2305.
- Counseling Services will conduct an initial assessment and make one of the following recommendations: 1) Medical/Psychological Withdrawal; or 2) Participation in 4 (four) Counseling Assessment Sessions and return to class/residence halls.
- Counseling Services will ask the student to sign a release of information form allowing communication with the Director of Student Conduct and/or the Director of Residence Life. The appropriate office(s) will be notified of the counselor recommendation.
- If 4 Counseling Assessment Sessions are recommended and the student misses any of the 4 scheduled sessions, Counseling Services will notify the Director of Student Conduct who may place the student on interim suspension pending student conduct action.
- At the completion of the 4 required counseling assessment sessions, Counseling Services will notify the Director of Student Conduct that the requirement has been met. Counseling may continue on a voluntary basis.
- At any time that Counseling Services staff judge that a student is dangerous to self or others, actions will be taken to prevent harm.
- If a Medical/Psychological Withdrawal is recommended and the student refuses to pursue this option, the case will be referred to the Director of Student Conduct for action.
Questions regarding this policy can be directed to Jennie Cassidy, Director of Counseling Services at (843) 349-2305 or Travis Overton, Director of Student Conduct at (843) 349-4161.
