SHORE

Students Helping Others Reach Excellence

SHORE is a group of students who educate their fellow students about healthy living.  SHORE members can choose to be peer assistants and/or peer educators. Peer assistants work with Counseling Services staff to raise awareness about various psychological issues. Peer Educators are trained and supervised to provide educational programs to classes, organizations, teams, and other student groups.

Training

Peer Educators are trained in presentation skills, initiating creative programming, and developing knowledge of various psychological issues.  They are taught to provide programs on self-esteem, drugs/alcohol, stress management, relationships, and healthy living.  Other topics are included according to participant interest.  Programs are initially co-presented with professional staff of Counseling Services or other Peer Educators until new Peer Educators are comfortable presenting on their own.

Training consists of a 1-day retreat offered on a weekend early in the semester.  On-going training occurs through a weekly staff meeting.

Responsibilities

Peer Educators are expected to participate in all training activities.  They are encouraged to participate in the planning and implementation of events such as the safe party pledge, eating disorders awareness week, and sexual assault prevention programming. While it is hoped that SHORE members will provide multiple outreach programs each semester, those uncomfortable with public speaking can still participate through "behind the scenes" preparation of programs and events.

Benefits

The benefits to being a peer assistant or peer educator are unlimited.  Some of the benefits may include learning about healthy living for yourself, having an opportunity to help others, developing presentation skills, building your resume, making friends and having fun.  Peer Educators work together as a team with a built-in support network!

Internships

SHORE members may complete internships in conjunction with an academic department.  In addition to the responsibilities listed above, interns develop a list of projects to be completed throughout the semester.  Such projects could be suggested by Counseling Services Staff or could be identified through a needs assessment completed by the intern.  Projects may include writing and designing a brochure, coordinating an awareness week, writing a newsletter, collecting and analyzing data, developing an informational campaign on a specific topic, writing articles to be submitted to The Chanticleer, etc.  The possible projects are endless and interns are encouraged to take on projects that fit with their needs and passions.  While weekly supervision is provided to interns, in addition to group supervision through the weekly SHORE meeting, interns are expected to work relatively independently on the projects they’ve committed to.  Projects may be done in conjunction with other SHORE members or staff members.  Interns are expected to monitor their hours to ensure that they are meeting the requirements of the academic department.
