People News
Suzanne Thompson and John Marino have joined the ITS team to serve as Technology Specialists in the CETL Center TEAL lab. Also, Sarah (Steinlich) Briggs joined the CETL to serve as Office Support Person.
Suzanne has worked at CCU from 1995-2001 as the coordinator of the Foreign Language Instructional Center and taught freshman English. She moved to the Atlanta, Ga. area where she coordinated technology and online courses for the Continuing Education Dept. at Kennesaw State University, taught British literature courses online for Southern New Hampshire University, and became certified in web design.
John has a background in engineering management, communications, technical publications and founded three small businesses—two in New York and one in South Carolina. His most recent small business is a computer repair and home entertainment systems design and installation business. He has previously worked at Ericsson and MPD Technologies.
Sarah worked for the TEAL Lab as a Student Technology Assistant while at Coastal and a Technology Assistant for a semester after graduation in 2005. She will be pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching in the fall of 2007.
We welcome all three of them to the Coastal family and to the ITS team.
Pierre-Olivier Tavernier decided to take another job as the Helpdesk Manager for Student Technology Support at Patrick Henry College, Purcellville, VA. Pierre has worked as an Information Resource Consultant to support the College of Business since 1999. He also supervised the Wall Computer Lab. We wish Pierre and his family the very best in their new endeavor.

Vista and Office 2007
Vista and Office 2007 will be rolled out gradually. No massive roll out, such as labs, will be done prior to the summer of 2007. Many factors have to be taken into account: hardware requirements, network & security issues, and curriculum based decisions. Professors should inform students who already have Office 2007 installed on their individual computers to Save As their documents in 97-2003 formats for backward compatibility. Professors can also ask their IRCs for a file converter issued by Microsoft. In addition, students can be referred to Student Computing Services (SCS) in the Prince building for help.
ITS staff members are testing Vista and Office 2007 extensively for a timely implementation.

Daylight Saving
This year Daylight Saving will start on Sunday, March 11th , three weeks earlier than previous years. To make the necessary time adjustment, most computers need to be patched. The majority, if not all, of CCU users update and patch their computers on a regular basis and most likely the appropriate patch has already been applied.
To update MS Windows:
Click Start, All Programs, and then Windows Update
Mac users are affected as well! Depending on the operating system, users may have to manually change the time by opening the System Preferences, and then clicking on Date & Time.
Users who synchronize their Outlook calendars with MS Exchange Web Calendars could be affected even if patches are applied. They should verify their schedules for accuracy and contact their IRCs to use updating tools if necessary.

New Look: Datatel UI
Datatel has also developed a graphical user-interface to replace the current menu-driven user interface for PCs. All Datatel users must use the new Datatel UI by the end of July 2007. The cost per license is $199.
But, I am a Mac user!
Datatel recently completed the Datatel UI Web Client that will work on PCs and Macs. No installation will be necessary, but the license fee of $199 still needs to be charged to the department.

AVAYA Voice Messaging System
There are still a considerable number of users who have not upgraded to the AVAYA Voice Messaging System. The AVAYA system will entirely replace the current system by July of 2007. To avoid any loss of voice messages, users who have not switched to the new system must switch before July. Individuals can switch by submitting a job request at www.coastal.edu/its/jobrequest, contact their IRCs, or contact Betty Willard at ext. 2084.
The AVAYA Voice Messaging System was initially featured in the February 2006 CyberChant issue.

Technology Being Evaluated: Wireless IP Phones
ITS is evaluating and testing Wireless IP Phones (Wireless VoIP) for possible implementation of a converged wireless solution on campus. If implemented, Wireless IP Phones can be very beneficial for various departments. Benefits will include seamless access to office phones and cost savings on the use of cell phones. Employees can use their office phones from any location supported by the campus network infrastructure.

How True It Is!
Recently, I read an article in COMPUTERWORLD magazine, written by IT Mentor Robert C. Anderson. In this article, Mr. Anderson talks about the “25 Time-Tested Truths About IT Support.” Number 25, in particular, brought years of reminiscence: “25. Irretrievable data corruption usually occurs on files that are not backed up.” I thought to myself, how many times in the past 14-16 years have we tried to recover data on lost or corrupted files for faculty, staff, or students? And how many times have we been able to recover the corrupted or lost data except for the ones that were not backed up?
It goes like this:
Us: “We were able to recover most of your files except for very a few.” Proudly and happily stated!
Users: “Great!” Wide smile. “Which ones were irrecoverable?”
Us: “These.”
Users: “Which ones?”
Us: “This one, this one, and this one.”
Users: “Oh, no! These are the ones I needed, and I did not back them up.”
No comments on the final facial expressions.
I must say that there were also many times when we were able to recover all files, including the ones that were not backed up!
Still, back up all files, especially the ones you need, frequently.
Respectfully,
A. Haddad

One More Thing!
Bob (you know Bob, the Unix System Administrator) would like to remind everyone to purge their deleted mail. One of the main reasons that email accounts become over quota is the non-purging of deleted email messages.
To purge deleted messages:
Webmail:
Depending on your Option Settings,
Click "Purge Deleted" link to the right in the Folder Heading
Or
Click "Empty Trash" Icon at the top left
Outlook 2003:
Click, Tools, and then Empty "Deleted Items" Folder
