Professional Program Admission Information

Portal I – Admission to the Professional Program of Teacher Education

Candidates apply for admission to the professional program of teacher education when they have completed at least 60 cumulative hours of coursework and have at least a 2.5 GPA. The following evidence is required and reviewed by the college’s Office of Admissions and Program Quality and a standing faculty committee:

Initial Undergraduate

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5,
  • Grade of “C” or better in designated core courses
  • Grade of “C” or better in any education courses taken,
  • Praxis I OR
    • Score of 1100 or higher on OLD SAT
    • 1650 or higher on NEW SAT (verbal, math, writing)
    • 24 or higher ACT
  • A criminal background disclosure statement,
  • Three letters of recommendation, and
  • Approval of Portal I Faculty Committee.

Portal II - Admission to the Internship

Candidates complete an application and submit it to the college Office of Admissions and Program Quality with the following evidence:

Initial Undergraduate

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5,
  • Grade of “C” or better in every education core and teaching specialization course,
  • Program faculty recommendation, and
  • Passing scores on all required Praxis II Exams.
  • All major coursework completed,
  • Two Dispositions:   Senior I methods faculty and Senior I university supervisor,
  • Satisfactory completion and performance in a minimum of 100 hours in Field Experiences I, II, III, and IV,
  • Satisfactory completion of the Instructional Planning Unit Assessment,
  • Satisfactory completion of an initial Teacher Work Sample (TWS must be 70% accurate),
  • SLED and FBI fingerprint clearance and disclosure statement (Exhibit 4A), andPortal II Faculty Committee Approval.
  • Portal II Faculty Committee Approval.

 Portal III – Successful Completion of the Internship

Candidates submit evidence of completing a minimum of 60 days participation in their assigned internship with documentation of the following:

Initial Undergraduate

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5,
  • Summative evaluation ratings of 3 or higher on each performance dimension of the Intern Observation Instrument,
  • Completion of all diversity placement requirements,
  • Successful completion of the Coastal Carolina University (CCU) ADEPT observation and post conference,
  • Two additional dispositions ratings for the internship: cooperating teacher and intern supervisor,
  • Satisfactory completion of a comprehensive Teacher Work Sample (TWS must be 80% accurate), and
  • (Beginning Fall 2006) Passing Score on appropriate Praxis II PLT Exam.

Portal IV – Portfolio Clearance and Program Completion

Candidates must complete an application for graduation and teacher certification and provide evidence that they have:

Initial Undergraduate

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5,
  • Degree Certification form which is signed by advisor, department chair, and Dean,
  • Program recommendation for graduation,
  • Final Rating of 3 or higher on each disposition,
  • Completion of all requirements and application for South Carolina Teacher Certification, and
  • Program Chairperson recommendation to the Dean.
