Teacher Cadets

The Teacher Cadet Program at Coastal Carolina University is designed to attract talented young people to the teaching profession by offering an honors level high school course that introduces them to the nature of teaching, the problems of schooling, and critical issues affecting the quality of education in America's schools. The primary goal of the Teacher Cadet Program is to encourage academically able students who possess exemplary interpersonal and leadership skills to consider teaching as a career. An important secondary goal of the Program is to provide these talented future community leaders with insights about teachers and schools so that they will be civic advocates of education. Cadets are offered the option for three hours of college credit upon successful completion of the course.
Twenty-four of South Carolina's thirty colleges and universities with teacher education programs provide support to the Teacher Cadet sites. Coastal Carolina University is proud to partner with Teacher Cadet Programs in eleven area high schools:
- Andrews
- Carolina Forest
- Carver's Bay
- Conway
- Georgetown
- Myrtle Beach
- North Myrtle Beach
- Saint James
- Socastee
- Sumter
- Waccamaw
Coastal Carolina University hosts Teacher Cadet College Day during Fall semester, which provides Cadets in Region 4 with opportunities to learn about teacher education programs offered in the Spadoni College of Education; ask questions about admission and financial support options; tour the campus; visit a dorm and the library; eat lunch at the Commons; participate in team building activities; interview former Cadets who are education majors; hear from the South Carolina Teacher of the Year; and get to know other high school students interested in teaching as a career. College Day 2008 welcomed 178 student participants and 10 instructors to our campus.
